Week One in the Bag!

First week of training is done, and for once, I think  might actually enjoy my rest day!  Here's a little breakdown of what the week involved.

Monday:  Rest day.  Was not feeling 100% after being out of town and getting sick.  I literally laid on the couch for the entire day.  I don't do it often, but it felt pretty good:

Tuesday:  Bike Test.  This involved a warm up, and then an all out 20 minute effort, keeping track of my average heart rate during the 20 minute effort.  I ended up at 169, which is apparently great.  My coach said that a lot of the guys aren't that good :)  From that test, she figured out all my heart rate zones, and has me training mostly in zone 2 (more about that later)

Wend:  45 minute run

Thur: 1 hour swim

Friday: 45 minute run.  I also chose to start the 2017 Tour of Sufferlandria .  It's a 9 day "tour" where you do a cycling video each day.  These videos are CRAZY hard. The tour raises money for the Davis Phinney Foundation, which works to improve the quality of life of those with Parkinson's. If you would like to donate to the cause, you can do so here.  One of my law school friend's and I have made a small bet regarding who completes the tour AND the largest percentage of our coach required training. So far, I'm leading, but it's neck and neck.
Sufferlandria on the trainer.

Saturday:  This was a doozy of a day.  First, 1 hour swim.  Then I couldn't resist going outside with friends for a bike ride.  We had a beautiful weekend in Denver.  Highs in the 60s.  But the winds were crazy!  I was supposed to do about a 2 hour bike ride mostly in zone 2,  But with the wind, and trying to keep up with my group, that didn't work out so well.  I definitely didn't eat enough between swimming and biking, and so the first part of the ride was a total suck.  After I got some more food and water, I felt a little better though. We got 37 miles in, and then I rushed home, shoved some more food in my mouth, and got on the trainer to do my sufferfest video.  I was pooped for sure! I haven't done 6 hours of working out in a couple of months, at least! And certainly not with that kind of wind!  As much as I wanted to sit on the couch and just stare into space for the rest of the day, I had made plans to go out with some friends for dinner and drinks.  So it was off to a quick shower, and then out to meet them.

Who doesn't want to burn 6,000 calories in a day?

Sunday:  70 minute zone 2 run.  I woke up with a nasty hangover.  I think it was a combo of not eating and drinking enough.   Massive headache and clearly dehydrated.  Oh, and with instructions from my coach to be sure to begin this run well hydrated.  Oops. Went to the store to get stuff for the party and got a few things done around the apartment, and then there was no more delaying what had to get done.  The instructions were to keep my heart rate in zone 2 for the run.  That's hard! (Under about 151 beats per/minute). I ended up running some pretty slow miles, and only got about 5.5 miles in during the 70 minutes.  It feels weird to train at such low intensity.  Not something that I've ever done before.  But I guess to get different results, you have to do things differently! After I finished the run, I quickly changed (I think being a triathlete is really just a series of quick outfit changes. all. the. time), and hopped on the trainer to get my sufferfest video done.  The coach didn't call for any biking today, so i figured I better keep the intensity pretty low.  So I reduced my FTP and rode in zone 2 for the whole time.  Luckily this video was only about 50 minutes, so then I hopped off the trainer, showered and changed (see, more costume changes), and finished getting ready for the Super Bowl Party.  I had about 10 people over, and it was a fun time.  Made chili, pizza dip, and all the fixings.

This is the pond in the middle of my apartment complex that has a 1 mile jogging trail around it.  I boosted the pic with some instragram filters, but it is awesome to be able to get out and run so easily!

Here is the summary for the week.  Feels great to have that chart not be just biking with a sliver of running, and to have my fitness level going up again!  Hip felt totally normal during all of the runs, and the back barely bugged me on the swim on Saturday (and not at all on Thursday), so hopefully things are getting better with those!

This week is a even more crazy looking!
Monday: rest (I usually hate rest day, but in combo with the craziness of Saturday and not sleeping well, this might be a good thing.  But let's wait and see if I really rest, or if I do Sufferfest tonight).
Tuesday: 1 hour bike, 35 minute brick (i.e. right after biking) run.  I think I'm going to try and accomplish these at my favorite Endorphin! (Plus sufferlandria)
Wend:  35 minute run, 1 hour swim (plus sufferlandria and a work event! Yikes!)
Thur: 70 minute bike
Friday: 1 hour swim (+ sufferlandria)
Saturday: 1:30 bike, 30 minute brick run
Sunday: 2 hr bike
